A year into his tenure as federal police ombudsman, SPD politician Uli Grotch paints a stark picture of structural issues plaguing German law enforcement. In an interview with the "Web.de News" portal, Grotch admits his five years in office may not be enough to tackle all the problems already evident.

According to Grotch, the authorities need to be more sensitive towards issues like sexism, racism, and bullying within the police. A study suggests that 42% of police officers exhibit hostility towards asylum seekers, he adds, labeling this "a major structural problem." Women in leadership positions is another area demanding improvement.

Grotch's role includes overseeing the Federal Police, the Federal Criminal Police Office, and the police at the German Bundestag. While he admits having criticized police action, he has yet to encounter instances of unlawful police violence. Grotch, however, underlines the necessity of improving the way errors are handled and acknowledged within the force.

To address these concerns, Grotch advocates for more training, further education, and increased personnel in the Federal Police. Acknowledging the growing demands, he maintains investments should not be made at the expense of security authorities. The future government, according to him, must prioritize their funding.

Officers often voice a lack of respect, with verbal abuse and physical attacks commonplace at train stations across the country, Grotch shares. Such sentiments give him pause.
