Off-duty police officer fatally gunned down by store clerk allegedly experiencing a difficult day, according to officials.

In a shocking turn of events, Eduardo Labrada Machado, a convenience store employee, has been arrested and charged with the murder of off-duty police officer David Jewell. The incident occurred at a Circle K gas station in a Daytona Beach area, as per the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.

David Jewell, a police officer with the city of Edgewater, was the unfortunate victim of this tragic event. It is unclear if Labrada Machado knew that Jewell was a police officer or had ever seen him in his uniform.

Upon arriving at work and seeing Jewell, Eduardo Labrada Machado used a handgun he had recently purchased to shoot Jewell multiple times at close range. The gun used in the shooting was found in a jacket in Labrada Machado's vehicle. Labrada Machado has been charged with first-degree murder.

Labrada Machado, a legal U.S. resident with a green card, has no attorney listed in court or jail records. The lawyer representing Labrada Machado in this case is not publicly disclosed.

Investigations have revealed that Labrada Machado had previously seen and argued with Jewell. However, interviews with Labrada Machado's family revealed a history of mental illness and hearing voices. It's important to note that Labrada Machado's family was not aware of any homicidal threats or anti-law enforcement sentiment.

This is not Labrada Machado's first encounter with law enforcement. In 2023, he was involved in an incident at Tomoka State Park, where he pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge, and adjudication was withheld.

The community is left in shock and mourning, as they grapple with the loss of a dedicated police officer and the circumstances surrounding his death. The investigation is ongoing, and more details may be released as the case progresses.
