In the summer of 2025, Sevilla FC welcomed Greek international goalkeeper Odysseus Vlachodimos on a season-long loan from Newcastle United [1][2][4][5]. The 31-year-old veteran will compete for the starting spot at the Nervión goal, aiming to rejuvenate his career and secure first-team appearances in La Liga.

Vlachodimos began his professional journey at VfB Stuttgart, making his Bundesliga debut in 2015. He then spent three seasons at Panathinaikos FC before joining SL Benfica for six seasons, where he made 225 appearances, including 32 in the Champions League and 12 in the Europa League. He won two Portuguese league titles and two Super Cups during his tenure at Benfica [1][2].

In 2023, Vlachodimos moved to Nottingham Forest, making just five appearances before transferring to Newcastle United the following summer. However, despite a high investment by Newcastle, he only played one game all season - a League Cup match against Wimbledon [1][2].

The move to Sevilla is a loan deal without a transfer fee or purchase option [1][2]. The club continues to negotiate the departure of the Riojan goalkeeper. Vlachodimos' lack of minutes at Newcastle has resulted in him losing his place in the Greek national team to Tzolakis (Olympiacos) and Mandas (Lazio) [3].

Despite his pedigree, Vlachodimos has yet to convince Nyland, the starter at Sevilla, or Almeyda, the coach. Nyland knows he's the starter, and Álvaro Fernández doesn't convince either the Extremaduran or Matias Almeyda. The goalkeeper squad is completed by Alberto Flores [6].

Vlachodimos' international career extends beyond Europe, having represented Germany at youth levels and winning a European Under-21 Championship. Since 2018, he has represented Greece at senior level, earning 48 caps [2]. Although not specified, his experience and current active role in La Liga with Sevilla could positively influence his chances for future Greece national team call-ups, potentially including World Cup squads. His 48 international caps show he is an established member of the Greek national team [2].

As Vlachodimos arrives at Sevilla Airport to play the next season with the club, he hopes to regain his place in the Greek national team and potentially play in the FIFA World Cup event in Mexico, the United States, and Canada next year. Sevilla FC aims to utilize Vlachodimos, who was bought by Newcastle United for approximately €23 million last summer [7].

In his desire to revive his career, Odysseus Vlachodimos, a season-long loan recruit from Newcastle United, aims to secure first-team appearances in La Liga, not only for Sevilla FC but also to potentially rejoin the Greek national team after losing his place to Tzolakis (Olympiacos) and Mandas (Lazio). With his rich experience in European leagues, including the Champions League and Europa League, Vlachodimos, who was bought by Newcastle United for approximately €23 million last summer, might find an opportunity to showcase his skills in the 2026 FIFA World Cup event in Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
