Odisha Legislative Assembly Commencement on Thursday; Opposition Intends to Confront Majhi Administration

The Odisha Legislative Assembly is set to resume its monsoon session on Thursday, with a stormy affair expected due to the opposition's plans to criticise the government of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. The session, scheduled to run until September 25 with seven working days, is expected to be a battleground over fertiliser supply issues and rising concerns about women's safety.

Farmers in Odisha have been queuing up for days at Primary Agriculture Cooperative Societies (PACS) and Large Area Multipurpose Societies (LAMPS) for fertiliser supplies, as the opposition alleges that an "artificial scarcity" has been created by cooperatives, leaving farmers anxious at a crucial stage of the cultivation season.

The opposition is also planning to criticise the government over rising crimes against women, following a recent incident in Puri where a Dalit woman was gang-raped. However, this fact is not directly related to the ongoing session.

In an effort to maintain law and order, Section 144 of the CrPC will remain in force in the Lower PMG area to prevent mass gatherings. Commissionerate Police has put in place elaborate arrangements, with five temporary police control rooms, CCTV surveillance, striking forces, Special Tactical Units, bomb disposal squads, dog squads, and fire services mobilised. A three-tier security system has been deployed, with 30 platoons of police stationed at strategic points across the city.

The BJD, the ruling party in Odisha, has staged a demonstration at Raj Bhavan in Bhubaneswar, signalling its intent to escalate the protest within the Assembly. The city is under tight security ahead of the session due to the potential for unrest.

In a related development, the Congress plans to move a no-confidence motion against the Majhi government, accusing it of failing to protect women and children amid reports of increasing atrocities. However, the outcome of this motion remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, Chhattisgarh Police has begun an investigation into the authenticity of Maoists' fresh peace talks offer, a fact not directly related to the Odisha situation. Co-chair Model can Transform Politics: Foza Yusif, a statement not directly related to the Odisha situation, has also been made.

As the session begins, the focus remains on the political struggles and the need for a peaceful and productive discussion on the issues at hand. The government and the opposition will have to navigate these challenges to ensure the smooth functioning of the Assembly.
