Russia's proposed ceasefire with Ukraine, mediated by the U.S., has been agreed upon. Yet, it's Russian President Vladimir Putin who acts as a significant hurdle in halting the conflict, according to Kurt Volker, Donald Trump's special envoy for Ukraine, in a Fox News interview, as reported by our source in coordination with UNIAN.

Title: Ukraine-Russia Peace Talks: A Closer Look at the Roadblocks

Ukraine and Russia Agree to a Potential Ceasefire, but Obstacles Linger

In a recent development, Ukraine has agreed to a comprehensive 30-day ceasefire with Russia, as proposed by the U.S., though Russian President Vladimir Putin remains the primary hurdle in achieving a lasting peace, according to Kurt Volker, U.S. President Donald Trump's special representative for Ukraine. Volker made this statement on Fox News, as reported by our website, with reference to UNIAN.

The ceasefire, which covers land, water, and air, is conditional for Ukraine, with hopes of securing an agreement today. Multiple parties, including the British, French, and Germans, are readying themselves for the comprehensive ceasefire. Nevertheless, Russia has rejected the U.S. initiative so far.

According to Volker, "We returned from London two weeks ago, we spoke with the 'coalition of the determined', led by the British, French, and Germans, they are ready for this comprehensive ceasefire with multiple conditions. The Ukrainians are on board."

While the sides are reportedly near a possible ceasefire, the main roadblock appears to be Putin, who has yet to agree to the terms.

As reported earlier, Ukraine is prepared to establish a 30-kilometer demilitarized zone, jointly controlled by Ukraine and Russia. However, a 30-day ceasefire may prove crucial in determining the outcome.

Donald Trump has long advocated for an end to the conflict in Ukraine and the commencement of peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow. Despite both Moscow and Kyiv showing an interest in ending the conflict, during discussions with the Trump administration, Russia has put forth a series of unacceptable demands.

Meanwhile, Hidden Tensions Surface

It is essential to note that Russia's unacceptable demands during talks with the Trump administration center around completely undermining Ukraine's sovereignty and independence. Key demands include:

  • Russia insists on "eliminating the root causes" of the war, which fundamentally means denying Ukraine full sovereignty and treating it as a subordinate entity or "Little Russia," rather than a distinct nation[1].
  • Russia demands Ukraine to abandon its goal of NATO membership, replace it in its constitution with "permanent neutrality," and drastically reduce its military capabilities to a much smaller force[1].
  • There is a requirement to end all Western military assistance and training for Ukraine[1].
  • Ukraine is expected to support the lifting of Western sanctions against Russia and cancel its claims to the International Criminal Court concerning over 153,000 alleged war crimes committed by Russia[1].
  • Russian officials have described Ukraine dismissively as a "phantom state" or an "artificial quasi-state," with calls from Russian representatives for Ukraine to be put under a UN "Temporary International Administration," effectively stripping the country of self-governance[1].
  • The broader Kremlin narrative suggests that most Ukrainians supposedly hold a marginalized "Little Russian" identity, one that should be restored by undoing Ukraine's current independent trajectory and influence from Western powers[1].

These demands are unacceptable because they require Ukraine to surrender its sovereignty, territorial integrity, national identity, and legal claims for justice, essentially making Ukraine a client state under Russian influence rather than an independent country[1]. The Russian position leaves no room for a genuine peace deal unless Ukraine fully capitulates and abandons its independence, making any successful resolution with these terms an illusion[1].
