Author Pavel Tigrid encounters fresh hindrance in his writing career - Obstacle emerges for author Pavel Tigrid in latest venture
In the heart of Prague, a new Stolperstein has been laid, commemorating the life and contributions of Czech writer Pavel Tigrid. The Stolperstein project, a creation of German artist Gunter Demnig, is a series of brass cobblestones that mark the last freely chosen residences of Holocaust victims and other persecuted individuals.
Born Pavel Schoenfeld, Tigrid was a Jew who fled to England in 1939 to escape the Nazis. After World War II, he returned to his homeland but went into exile a second time due to the communist takeover in Czechoslovakia in 1948.
Tigrid's exile was marked by significant contributions to reconciliation between Germans and Czechs. He edited the exile magazine 'Svedectvi' (Testimony) first in New York and then in Paris. From 1951 to 1952, he headed the Czech Redaction of the US broadcaster Radio Free Europe (RFE) in Munich.
Later in his life, Tigrid served as an advisor to President Vaclav Havel on German-Czech relations after the democratic revolution of 1989. He is considered one of the founders of the German-Czech Forum for Dialogue.
In recognition of his services, Tigrid received the Grand Cross of the Federal Republic of Germany with a Star in 2000. He held the position of Minister of Culture from 1994 to 1996.
For the Stolperstein laying ceremony, Tigrid's son Gregory and daughters Deborah and Katerina traveled from France. The proposal for the Stolperstein in Prague was initiated by the German-Czech Future Fund.
The Stolperstein in Prague commemorates Tigrid's contributions in the context of National Socialism. Tigrid, who later worked for reconciliation between Germans and Czechs, is remembered not only for his literary works but also for his efforts towards healing the wounds of the past. The Stolperstein serves as a poignant reminder of his life and legacy.
