Obstacle contest results place Krause seventh, Weber earns a medal
World Championships in Athletics: Exciting Finals Ahead as Germany Aims for More Medals
The Athletics World Championships in Tokyo are heating up, with several exciting finals on the horizon and German athletes aiming to add to their medal tally.
In the men's javelin final, world number one Julian Weber is hoping to end his streak of fourth-place finishes at global championships. Weber qualified second after recovering from a virus infection, setting a distance of 87.21 meters in the qualifying round. Frank Busemann, Atlanta silver medalist, gave Weber some breathing room in the final, setting the stage for an exciting competition. However, Weber finished seventh in the final, falling short of his goal.
In the women's 3000m steeplechase final, Faith Cherotich from Kenya won the gold medal in a time of 8:51.59 minutes, while Peruth Chemutai from Uganda fell and did not finish the race. Doris Lemngole (Kenya) and Norah Jeruto (Kazakhstan) also fell in the finish, adding drama to the event. Double European champion Gesa Krause set a season best of 9:14.27 minutes in the final, but it wasn't enough to secure a medal.
The favorites in the 400m hurdles are Rai Benjamin (USA), who won gold with a time of 46.52 seconds in the previous competition, Alison dos Santos (Brazil) with silver, and Abderrahman Samba (Qatar) with bronze. In the women's event, Femke Bol defended her title. Germany's Emil Agyekum qualified fifth in the final, equaling the time of legendary Harald Schmid, while Eileen Demes failed to qualify, finishing 24th with a time of 55.98 seconds.
Jörg Bügner, Performance Sports Director, predicts more emotional moments, thrilling competitions, and potential surprises in the second half of the World Championships. The DLV (German Athletics Association) has already won three silver medals, more than at the 2022 World Championships in the USA.
In the 1500m final, Robert Farken from Leipzig finished sixth in a time of 3:35.15 minutes, his best season ever. Meanwhile, U23 European champion Owe Fischer-Breiholz had to withdraw due to injury.
All eyes will be on Julian Weber as he looks to secure a long-awaited global championship medal in the men's javelin final. The competition promises to be intense, with several other athletes aiming to make their mark on the world stage. Stay tuned for more updates from the World Championships in Tokyo.
