Obstacle contest results: Krause finishes seventh; Weber wins a medal
The World Athletics Championships in Tokyo have been a rollercoaster ride for German athletes, with several heart-stopping moments and impressive performances.
In the men's 400m hurdles, Elena Kelety ran a personal best of 54.61 seconds, finishing 15th. Despite the disappointing result, Kelety's performance was a testament to her determination and hard work.
Meanwhile, in the 1500m final, Robert Farken from Leipzig finished an impressive sixth, setting a personal best time of 3:35.15 minutes. Farken's performance was a highlight for the German team, as he battled the heat and humidity more than expected during the championships.
The women's 3000m steeplechase final was a dramatic event, with several athletes falling at the final water jump. Peruth Chemutai (Uganda) and Doris Lemngole (Kenya) were among those who fell, while Norah Jeruto (Kazakhstan) also fell in the final stretch. Gesa Krause, twice European champion, demonstrated her fighting qualities and finished seventh, despite a fall at the final water jump. Krause also set a season-best of 9:14.27 minutes in the final.
Julian Weber, world-leading in the javelin, had a close call at the final water jump but managed to qualify for the final as the fifth-best. In the final, Weber finished seventh, with a throw of 87.21 meters, below his world-leading mark of 91.51 meters. Frank Busemann, Atlanta silver medalist, gave Weber some breathing room in the final.
Despite the disappointing result, Weber remains hopeful for the future. He aims to break his "perennial fourth place" label in the javelin final and could become the fourth German javelin throw world champion after Johannes Vetter, Matthias de Zordo, and DDR athlete Detlef Michel, if he wins the final.
The German Athletics Association has already won three silver medals through long jumper Malaika Mihambo, marathon runner Amanal Petros, and hammer thrower Merlin Hummel, more than at the 2022 World Championships in the USA. With several athletes still in contention for medals, the German team is looking forward to more success in the coming days.
Eileen Demes failed to qualify for the 400m hurdles final, finishing 24th in 55.98 seconds. However, the athletes who qualified for the final in the women's 400-meter hurdles include two out of three German participants.
Overall, the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo have been a thrilling event for German athletes, with several dramatic finals and impressive performances. As the championships continue, the German team is looking forward to more success and medals in the coming days.
