Obstacle contest: Krause places seventh; Weber earns a medal

The German Athletics Association has made a strong start at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, securing three silver medals so far, surpassing their tally from the 2022 World Championships in the USA.

One of the silver medals was claimed by Julian Weber, who is aiming to break his 'perennial fourth place' label in Tokyo. Weber qualified second best for the men's javelin final, but felt the heat and humidity 'worse than expected' during the qualification. However, he managed a decent 87.21 meters, falling short of his world-leading mark of 91.51 meters. Weber is Germany's biggest gold hope in the men's javelin final.

Unfortunately, U23 European champion Owe Fischer-Breiholz had to withdraw from the 400m hurdles due to injury. In his absence, Emil Agyekum stepped up, qualifying for the 400m hurdles final and becoming the second German to break the 48-second barrier. Agyekum also achieved a personal best of 47.83 seconds in the qualification.

In the women's 3000m steeplechase, Faith Cherotich from Kenya won the title with a time of 8:51.59 minutes, while Peruth Chemutai (Uganda) and Doris Lemngole (Kenya) fell in the final water jump. Doris Jeruto (Kazakhstan) also fell at the same point, and Gesa Krause, the double European champion, finished seventh despite setting a season best of 9:14.27 minutes and a fall at the final water jump.

Isaac Nader from Portugal won the 1500m final with a time of 3:34.10 minutes. Robert Farken from Leipzig finished sixth with a time of 3:35.15 minutes, which is his best ever season. Elena Kelety ran a personal best of 54.61 seconds in the 400m hurdles, finishing 15th. Eileen Demes failed to qualify for the 400m hurdles final, finishing 24th in 55.98 seconds.

Besides Julian Weber and Gesa Krause, German athletes at the championships included Malaika Mihambo (long jump), Yemisi Ogunleye (shot put), Gina Lückenkemper (100m sprint), and Emil Agyekum (400m hurdles), among a total of 28 German men and women nominated by the German Athletics Association (DLV).

Jörg Bügner, Performance Sports Director, expects more emotional moments, exciting competitions, and potential surprises in the second half of the World Championships.
