Obstacle competition results: Krause finishes seventh; Weber earns a medal
In the bustling city of Tokyo, the World Athletics Championships are in full swing, and German athletes are making their presence felt.
Emil Agyekum made history by qualifying for the 400m hurdles final, breaking the 48-second barrier after Harald Schmid as the second German in this event. His impressive time of 47.83 seconds places him in a strong position for the final.
Meanwhile, Gesa Krause, the double European champion, finished seventh in the 3000m steeplechase. Despite not making it to the podium, Krause set a season's best of 9:14.27 minutes in the race.
The 400m hurdles final was a chaotic affair, with several athletes, including Peruth Chemutai from Uganda, Doris Lemngole from Kenya, and Norah Jeruto from Kazakhstan, falling during the race. Elena Kelety, however, managed a personal best of 54.61 seconds, finishing 15th. Eileen Demes, unfortunately, failed to qualify, finishing 24th with a time of 55.98 seconds.
Julian Weber, the world's number one javelin thrower, is another German athlete to watch. Weber qualified for the javelin throw final with a throw of 87.21 meters, surpassing the required qualifying distance of 84.50 meters. He could become the fourth German javelin throw world champion after Johannes Vetter, Matthias de Zordo, and DDR athlete Detlef Michel.
Weber's main competition in the final will likely come from Frank Busemann, the Atlanta silver medalist, who gave him some breathing room in the qualifying round. Weber, who has narrowly missed out on a medal at the 2022, 2023 World Championships, and the 2021 Olympics, is aiming to win his first at this year's championships. However, he is not at 100% due to an infection and will need to be at his best to secure a medal.
Outside the athletics arena, Jörg Bügner, the Performance Sports Director, predicted more emotional moments, thrilling competitions, and potential surprises for the second half of the World Championships.
In the 1500m final, Robert Farken from Leipzig finished a commendable sixth. Isaac Nader from Portugal, on the other hand, took the gold in a time of 3:34.10 minutes. Farken's best season was in 2022, with his race time being 3:35.15 minutes.
Unfortunately, U23 European champion Owe Fischer-Breiholz had to withdraw due to injury.
The German Athletics Association has already won three silver medals at the World Athletics Championships, more than the two medals won at the 2022 World Championships in the USA. With several athletes still in contention, it looks like Germany is set for a strong finish at this year's championships.
