Oblivion Remastered Hides a Clever Homage to a Famous Viral Video from the Early 2010s Tech Sphere
Are you ready to join the battle in Oblivion Remastered? Do you crave the potion seller's strongest concoctions? Can't handle the potion seller's potion's power? Clueless about my ramblings? If you get my drift and have been engrossed in Oblivion Remastered, you might fancy visiting the console commands. There's a hidden gem of an easter egg waiting for you!
If you're scratching your head, here's a pointer to the 2011 YouTube video "Potion Seller" by Justin Kuritzkes, now renowned for penning scripts for movies like Challengers and Queer. It's an early 2010s meme, showcasing Kuritzkes playing out a chat between a knight and a potion vendor, complete with freaky face distortions often used back then. Spoiler alert: I hadn't seen this video till now, but it's clearly left an imprint on the web! With nearly 13 million views, our senior editor Robin Valentine considers it "a foundation stone of my personality"[1]. So, it's safe to say it's a significant deal!
So, what's the connection to Oblivion Remastered? Twitch streamer TerraGuildTV discovered a brand-new console command stashed away in the game that harks back to this very video. The command isn't shy about referencing the meme, and the description then says, "Powers the player up with the means of defeating the Romans coming to conquer the last free village of Gaul. 'Have you heard of my potions? ...My potions are too strong for you, traveler.'"[1] The last line is a direct quote from the video. The first part seems to be an subtle bonus reference made by French studio Virtuous (who co-developed the remaster) to Asterix the Gaul – a French comic and series of films about the titular Asterix keeping the village free from Roman rule[2]. Two niche references for the price of one? Sign me up!
I jumped into Oblivion Remastered to check if the console command was real, and lo and behold, it is! TerraGuildTV provides a sneak peek of what the command does, seemingly letting you hit anyone nearby with superhuman punch strength, sending them skyward straight into the stratosphere[1][3]. Since I'm currently on a sweaty achievement run, I haven't tampered with activating it myself, but I can't wait to use it in the inevitable troll playthrough where I intentionally wreck everything!
