ÖBB invests €25 million annually to battle winter’s harshest weather

Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) has rolled out its winter preparations to keep trains running smoothly. The company invests €25 million each year in cold-weather operations, relying on advanced technology and a dedicated workforce. Over 4,000 staff are now focused on tackling snow, ice, and other seasonal weather challenges across the network. ÖBB works with 55 weather stations to track conditions in real time. This data helps adjust operations before extreme weather hits. For the past 20 years, the rail operator has partnered with UBIMET for precise weather alerts tailored to its routes. The annual €25 million investment covers staff, equipment, and infrastructure protection. With heated switches, dedicated vehicles, and weather partnerships, ÖBB prepares for harsh weather conditions well in advance. These measures help ensure passengers and freight services face fewer interruptions as temperatures drop.
