Obama denounces the murder of Charlie Kirk, labeling political violence as a hazard to everyone involved

In a recent speech at the Jefferson Educational Society in Erie, Pennsylvania, former President Barack Obama condemned the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. Obama expressed his sympathies for Kirk's family and called the incident a tragedy.

Obama also criticized the current political climate in the United States, referring to it as a 'political crisis.' He accused the White House and many Republicans in Congress of being 'OK with just breaking the rules, just breaking the system in certain ways.' The former President believes that this makes the current moment a dangerous one and urged citizens to pay attention and those in power to stand up for these norms and rules.

The assassination of Charlie Kirk has gripped the country, and in the days since his death, Donald Trump and his allies have stated their intention to target 'radical left' groups, despite no link between them and the shooting. However, the Trump administration faced hurdles in targeting these groups, according to experts.

In response to Obama's comments, White House Deputy Press Secretary Abigail Jackson, who has served in her role since May 2025, accused the former President of being the architect of modern political division in America. She claimed that his division has inspired generations of Democrats to slander their opponents.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration deployed the National Guard to Washington, D.C., last month. This deployment was mentioned in relation to the administration's plans to target 'radical left' groups, despite no connection being established between them and the shooting of Charlie Kirk.

Former President Obama, however, emphasized that the nation's democratic system is grounded in the principle that people can disagree without resorting to violence. He also praised Utah Gov. Spencer Cox for his efforts to bring the country together after Kirk's killing.

In the midst of this political crisis, Obama stated that Trump is not taking the approach of focusing on the 'ties that bind us together.' Instead, the former President called for a return to a more civil and unifying form of political discourse.

Vice President JD Vance also addressed the situation, stating that they are not exploiting Charlie Kirk's death to achieve justice. The investigation into Kirk's assassination is ongoing, and the nation awaits the results to understand the motivations behind this tragic event.
