Obama Administration Officials Face Intensified Calls for Grand Jury Probe by Pam Bondi, according to reports
The Department of Justice, under Attorney General Pam Bondi, has initiated a grand jury investigation into allegations that Obama administration officials fabricated evidence regarding Russian interference in the 2016 election. This probe targets claims that Democratic officials falsely alleged collusion between Donald Trump's campaign and Russia to smear Trump during the campaign.
The grand jury has the authority to issue subpoenas and potentially consider indictments if the DOJ pursues a criminal case.
This investigation was prompted by a referral from Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who declassified documents in July 2025 that allegedly undermine the Obama administration’s conclusion that Russia sought to help Trump defeat Hillary Clinton in 2016.
While the DOJ has not officially commented and the Obama administration has not responded, Democrats have pointed to bipartisan congressional intelligence reviews affirming that Russia did try to interfere but did not manipulate or alter votes.
It's important to note that Tulsi Gabbard's interpretation of the investigation distorts past conclusions drawn by members of the intelligence community. The intelligence community has previously determined that Russia fielded an influence campaign to damage former Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and boost Trump.
Patrick Rodenbush, Obama's spokesperson, dismissed Trump's accusations as a "ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction". Similarly, Tulsi Gabbard's claims have been met with scepticism, with NPR reporting that while her files provide new information, they do not negate prior findings that Russia sought to influence U.S. voters during the 2016 election.
Meanwhile, Trump has argued that Obama and his team manipulated intelligence to damage his presidency and delegitimize it. This claim has been echoed by Tulsi Gabbard, who has accused Obama and his team of manipulating intelligence to delegitimize Trump's presidency.
The unfolding investigation promises to shed light on these allegations and potentially hold accountable those who may have acted inappropriately. As the investigation progresses, it is essential that all parties involved cooperate fully to ensure transparency and uphold the integrity of the democratic process.
