How I Solved Today's Strands

I reckon "fancy" seems to be the key here[5].

Those two Zs in the bottom left corner catch the eye, followed by SNAZZY[5]. Yep, it's looking like "fancy" synonyms alright!

GAUDY is chillin' in the bottom left corner[5].

I thought the X might be part of EXOTIC, but no dice on that front[5].

I see the word SHINY cutting right through the middle of the board... a-ha! It's OOHSHINY[5]. Sweet!

Makes it super easy to spot EXTRAVAGANT in the upper left corner[5].

LAVISH is also up in the upper left corner[5].

These last few letters are a bit tricky. I can craft EXUDE, but no luck there[5].

Ah, got ORNATE up in here now[5].

And finally, DELUXE[5].

How to Play Strands

You can find Strands on the New York Times website and in the NYT Games app[1].

When you start playing, you'll uncover a game board with letters, followed by a clue hinting at the puzzle's theme, like "Rollin' in cash." Your goal is to find the hidden words that fit the puzzle's theme[1].

Strategize like a dude who's good at puzzles

Pay extra attention to the "spangram," a word that tells you the puzzle's theme directly, for instance, FERMENTED, which describes things that taste better with age[4]. The spangram stretches across the whole game board and can run from left to right or top to bottom[4]. Once you've found the spangram, it'll be highlighted in yellow[4]. Crackin' the spangram just makes the whole puzzle a piece of cake[4].

Words in Strands can travel any direction (up, down, left, right, and diagonally)[1]. You'll only use each letter once, and there's only one correct solution[1]. When you identify one of the puzzle's words, it'll be highlighted in blue[1].

Facing a pickle? You can submit any non-theme words that are four letters or more[1] to receive hints. You can land up to three hints, and after using those, the "Hint" button will be clickable[1]. If you click it, a bunch of letters in one of the theme words will be highlighted for ya. Still gotta figure out the correct order, though[1]. If there's already a hint on the board and you use another hint before solving for that word, the letters for that word will be revealed[1].

Carve out your victory

Unlike Connections and Wordle, you can't technically lose Strands[1]. When you submit your guesses, you'll either uncover an answer, receive credit toward a hint, or receive a little shake like something just ain't quite right[1]. You can't run out of guesses, and there ain't no time limit either[1].

You win when you used up all the letters on the board, meaning you figured out the spangram and all the theme words[1]. Like other NYT games, upon solving the puzzle, you'll see a shareable card that shows your performance[1]: blue dots 🔵 indicate the theme words you found, the yellow dot 🟡 indicates when you snagged the spangram, and a lightbulb 💡 indicates the words you received help for[1].
