The New York Times' daily word game, Connections, unveiled its latest puzzle on August 11, 2022. This engaging brainteaser, available for free each day at midnight local time, challenges players to arrange 16 words into four groups based on shared themes.

The four themes for today's puzzle were:

  1. Ordinary: NORMAL, PLAIN, STANDARD, VANILLA
  2. Abandon: DESERT, DUMP, MAROON, STRAND
  3. Specs on Consumer Packaging: COUNT, MEASURE, VOLUME, WEIGHT
  4. Dark: AGES, CHOCOLATE, HORSE, MATTER

The puzzle hints provided further clues for each group:

  • The purple group was likened to bad logic, poorly plotted movies, and CDs.
  • The green group consisted of places with lanes, such as bowling alleys, highways, supermarkets, and swimming pools.
  • The blue group featured landmarks in Downtown N.Y.C., including Bowling Green, Brooklyn Bridge, City Hall, and Wall Street.

The purple group, known for its wordplay, was actually things with holes, with the answers being BOWLING BALL, COLANDER, GOLF COURSE, and SPONGE. The green group, hinted as places with lanes, had the answers BOWLING ALLEY, HIGHWAY, SUPERMARKET, and SWIMMING POOL. The blue group, hinted as notable sights in one of the wealthiest places in the world, had the answers BOWLING GREEN, BROOKLYN BRIDGE, CITY HALL, and WALL STREET.

The yellow group, the easiest of the four, was based on groups of 10. The answers for this group were BOWLING PINS, COMMANDMENTS, DECADE, and FINGERS, with the hint for the yellow group being FINGERS.
