NYPD reportedly forcefully tackled tennis star James Blake during a mistaken identity incident, as asserted by Blake himself.
In a surprising turn of events, former tennis player James Blake, who was ranked No. 4 in the world, was detained by the New York Police Department (NYPD) outside the Grand Hyatt Hotel in midtown Manhattan.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, and it appears that the NYPD was misled by a hotel employee who mistakenly identified Blake as a suspect in an identity theft investigation at the Grand Hyatt Hotel.
According to reports, Blake was physically slammed to the ground by plainclothes officers before being handcuffed. However, his plans to be in New York for the U.S. Open all week were not affected by his detainment.
The NYPD has since confirmed that Blake was released from police custody immediately after his identity was confirmed and no connection to the investigation was found. The detainment took place outside the hotel, and the identity of the second person who was also detained during the incident remains undisclosed.
Blake has not yet publicly addressed the internal investigation by the NYPD, but it is known that the NYPD's internal affairs bureau is investigating the use of force during the detainment of James Blake. The internal investigation is focused on whether its officers improperly used force during the incident.
Meanwhile, the NYPD spokesman has stated that the incident is ongoing, with the internal investigation examining the circumstances leading to the detainment of Blake. Blake himself stated that the officers did not say anything before rushing towards him.
The U.S. Open, which is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, is set to begin on August 26th. Blake has not announced whether he will participate in the tournament this year.
