Nyesom Wike Rules Out 2027 Presidential Bid Against Bola Tinubu: "I Won't Contest Against My Boss"
Nyesom Wike Declares No Participation in 2027 Election Against Tinubu
In a recent interview with BBC Pidgin, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has made it clear that he has no intention of running against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections. Despite speculations that he might join the race if the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) decides to zone its presidential ticket to the South, Wike has expressed his firm stance against competing with someone he currently works for.
Speaking candidly, Wike stated, "I will not contest. Why will I contest against someone I'm working for? He reiterated this when asked about his potential candidacy if the opposition party decides to zone its ticket to the South.
As for President Tinubu's chances in the 2027 election, Wike remains doubtful about any substantial opposition. "They said they will zone it to the South, let them zone first. When we get to the bridge we will know how to cross it," he said.
Regarding comparisons between his tenure and that of former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, who also served as FCT Minister during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Wike downplays any direct comparison. Emphasizing his unique approach to governance, Wike stressed, "I'm not working to be compared with anybody.
While El-Rufai has garnered recognition for his impactful tenure as FCT Minister, Wike points out that every minister has their own approach and priorities. "People are the ones judging because they are the ones that see, I have never stayed in Abuja before. When El-Rufai was the Minister, I was the Chairman of the Council and I didn’t come to Abuja, so it will be difficult for me to talk about comparison. All I know is that people said El-Rufai tried, I don’t work to compare."
