NYC Mayoral Election: Mamdani Secures Senator Stewart-Cousins' Resounding Endorsement, Completes Albany Triumph
New York Senate Majority Leader Endorses Democratic Mayoral Nominee Zohran Mamdani
Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, the leader of New York's state Senate, has given a "ringing endorsement" to Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani. The endorsement came after weeks of conversations between the two, and Stewart-Cousins praised Mamdani's focus on affordability and housing.
The endorsement comes at a critical time for Mamdani's campaign, as he faces off against other candidates in the November election. The backing of state leaders could play key roles in advancing his agenda at the state level if he is elected.
Mamdani has proposed raising taxes on corporations and individuals earning over $1 million to fund his policy agenda. However, Governor Kathy Hochul has stated she does not intend to approve the tax hikes as proposed.
The endorsement from Stewart-Cousins comes after a contentious primary season, during which Mamdani accused Governor Cuomo of engaging in Islamophobic behavior and deepening the distrust of Muslim New Yorkers by aligning himself with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Cuomo has described himself as a supporter of Israel and joined Netanyahu's defense team at the International Criminal Court last year.
Cuomo's decision to align himself with Netanyahu has raised concerns among Muslim New Yorkers, and his campaign was recently criticised for heckling during a visit to Haji Camp Masjid Mosque in Queens. Mamdani strongly denied any involvement in the incident and stated his campaign has never sold merchandise.
Mamdani's campaign has broadened the party's base, particularly among young and Asian voters. He has already received endorsements from Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Governor Hochul, as well as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Friday morning.
In a recent interview, Cuomo called the war in Gaza "horrific," urged an immediate end to the fighting, and sought to distance himself from Netanyahu. However, the damage may have already been done, as Mamdani's campaign continues to gain momentum.
The endorsements from state leaders could be a turning point in Mamdani's campaign, as he works to secure victory in November and bring his progressive agenda to New York City.
