NYC Mayor Eric Adams Drops 2025 Re-election Bid

Eric Adams, the incumbent Mayor of New York City, has announced his withdrawal from the 2025 mayoral election. Adams, who won the 2021 race, cited personal reasons for his decision.

Adams' popularity had been declining in recent months. His perceived closeness to former President Donald Trump and a corruption indictment in 2022, which was later dismissed, further damaged his electability and fundraising efforts.

His withdrawal has opened the door for progressive candidates. Zohran Mamdani, a self-described socialist, is now leading in the polls for the Democratic nomination. Mamdani, who declared his candidacy for the 2025 election cycle, has gained prominence following Adams' unexpected exit. He had previously beaten former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo by a significant margin in the Democratic primary. Adams was polling in the single digits in a recent Fox News poll when he decided to suspend his campaign.

Eric Adams' withdrawal from the 2025 New York City mayoral race has set the stage for a potential progressive victory. Zohran Mamdani, an unapologetic progressive, is currently leading in the polls. The election of a progressive candidate could mark a significant shift in New York City politics.
