NYC election opponents of Zohran Mamdani face slim prospects, despite potential alliance, as per a recent poll indication
The latest poll conducted by Zenith Research/Public Progress Solutions, released on Tuesday, indicates a clear frontrunner in the race for New York City mayor. Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, a Queens assemblyman, is leading the pack with 44% of the vote.
In this poll, which surveyed 1,000 likely voters, Mamdani outshines his closest competitors. Former governor Andrew Cuomo comes in second with 25% of the vote, followed by Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa with 12% and incumbent mayor Eric Adams with only 7%.
If Adams were to abandon his independent campaign, the poll found that Mamdani would still come out on top. In a hypothetical one-on-one scenario, Mamdani would win with 59% compared to Adams' 32%.
Similarly, if Cuomo were to drop out of the race, the survey has Mamdani winning with 55%, Sliwa in second at 16% and Adams in third at 14%.
The survey also reveals that a significant number of likely voters are not in favour of either Adams or Cuomo. Approximately 68% of those polled said Adams will never be their choice come November, while about 60% said they would never consider voting for Cuomo.
Mayor Eric Adams, despite his incumbency, failed to garner more than 7% of support in the poll. On the other hand, Sliwa, the GOP nominee, received 13% of likely voters in the poll.
In a head-to-head matchup, Cuomo came the closest among the candidates, but still only received 40% of likely voters compared to Mamdani's 55%.
If Mamdani were to face either Adams or Cuomo one on one, the poll found that Mamdani would handily win. This suggests that Mamdani is currently in a strong position in the New York City mayoral race.
The poll results underscore the challenge that both Adams and Cuomo face in their campaigns. With Mamdani leading the race, it remains to be seen how the election will unfold in the coming months.
