NYC DOT Completes Major Hillside Avenue Bus Priority Project

NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez has announced the completion of a major project on Hillside Avenue in Queens. The eight-mile bus priority project has added over 600 parking and loading spaces, supporting local businesses and improving public transport for 215,000 daily riders.

The new and improved bus lanes extend from 139th Street to Springfield Boulevard, serving 22 MTA bus routes and connecting to nearby subway lines, LIRR, and the JFK AirTrain. The design features parking lanes on each side, one traffic lane, one left-turn lane, and one bus lane in each direction.

Previously, only specific sections of Hillside Avenue had rush-hour bus lanes, first introduced in 1969. The new lanes are camera-enforced 24/7, freeing up curb space for deliveries and customer access to local shops. Commuters can now expect faster and more reliable service with shorter commutes.

The Hillside Avenue bus priority project is one of NYC DOT's longest, aiming to enhance service for all riders. With the addition of over 600 parking and loading spaces, local businesses are also set to benefit. The exact opening date of the new lanes is yet to be confirmed.
