Nuttaphong under consideration as potential Prime Minister for Pheu Thai Party
In a recent development, the Pheu Thai Party has expressed interest in approaching Nuttaphong Kunakornwong, the chief executive of SC Asset Corporation and husband of Pintongta Shinawatra Kunakornwong, as a potential prime ministerial candidate for the next general election in Thailand.
Nuttaphong, who is the eldest son-in-law of former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, visited his father-in-law at Klongprem Central Prison in August 2023. During this visit, letters written by Thaksin's grandchildren were handed to him. However, Nuttaphong has declined to comment on the matter, stating that he has not yet given it any thought.
Phumtham Wechayachai, a key figure in the Pheu Thai Party, has stated that he would consult with Nuttaphong regarding his political interests before considering him as a candidate. Mr Phumtham expressed optimism that Pheu Thai would win the next election, either as the number one or two party in Thailand. However, he also mentioned that he would seek approval from Nuttaphong's mother and wife before making any decisions. No new information about consultations with Nuttaphong's mother and wife was provided.
Pintongta Shinawatra Kunakornwong, who was previously speculated among Pheu Thai supporters as a possible successor to her younger sister, former prime minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, was not mentioned in relation to the potential candidacy of Nuttaphong. Similarly, no new information about Pintongta's possible succession was provided.
In a separate event, Khunying Potjaman na Pombejra, Thaksin's former wife, visited Pheu Thai headquarters to offer moral support to party members and MPs. Winyat Chartmontree, Thaksin's lawyer, arranged a non-contact visit through a glass partition during this visit.
Thaksin is currently serving a one-year sentence at Klongprem Central Prison. The Supreme Court ruled that Thaksin must serve his one-year prison sentence, rejecting his request for hospital time to count towards incarceration. In August 2023, Thaksin was transferred from Bangkok Remand Prison to the Police General Hospital due to chest pain, and spent about six months in the hospital's premium ward before being released on parole.
The mother of Nuttaphong Kunakornwong is not publicly known. This article will continue to monitor developments regarding Nuttaphong's potential political future and provide updates as more information becomes available about the Thai party city's political landscape.
