Football fans might want to gear up for some tears coming August, as Enrico Valentini, the beloved defender of 1. FC Nürnberg, is bidding adieu to the game after a storied career spanning 16 years.

With his contract expiring at the end of June, Valentini will be trading his jersey for a apron, as he's set to take over the U14 team of the Franconian traditional club. Known for his dedication and tireless commitment, Valentini's heart will always belong to the green and white.

Valentini will say his tearful goodbyes on the 6th of August against 1. FC Köln. Although an emotional person, the 281-time second division player, who has scored 16 goals, is hoping for a little Hollywood moment - a goal in his last home game.

"I've had a career that wasn't cheesy, so it would fit somehow," Valentini mused with a smile. Despite his limited playing time this season under coach Miroslav Klose, Valentini is still a beloved figure at the club.

Joti Chatzialexiou, Nürnberg's sports director, expressed heartfelt sentiments, referring to Valentini as "a model professional that every team would wish for." Despite the sadness of his departure, Valentini will be in close proximity to his football family, as he lives near the club with his wife Xenia and sons Emilio and Elia.

Joining the club at just four years old, Valentini grew up at 1. FC Nürnberg, working his way through the youth teams before transferring to VfR Aalen in 2010. Despite recently ambiguous rumors about his retirement, until official confirmation, Valentini remains a vital and respected member of the Nürnberg team.

As he prepares for the next chapter of his life, Valentini wants to express gratitude to those who have supported him on his journey. In particular, he wants to thank his parents Vincenzo and Maria, Italian immigrants who climbed the ranks of the Nuremberg gastronomy to support him and his sisters.

"There are not enough words to thank my parents," Valentini said with a choked voice. "I only found out years later how poor they were, that they had endless debts and yet they ran the restaurant. It's incredible what they went through, without us children even noticing."

As we cheer on his last game, we'll remember Enrico Valentini as a model professional, a dedicated family man, and a vital part of 1. FC Nürnberg's history.
