Rattled Rocky Redoubt: Over 470 Earthquakes in Four Days Shake South Japan Islands 🌋️
Down south in Japan's sweltering summer, a chain of remote islands, the Tokara islands, have been sent into a state of unease and disarray, as they've succumbed to more than 470 earthquakes since the weekend. The national weather agency stirred the pot, releasing a statement advising the residents to be on high alert, warning that as this region dwelt in ancient earthquake activity, they must remain vigilant against powerful shakes.
Amongst the most prominent tremors to surface were two magnitude-5.1 quakes, one occurring Sunday and the other popping up on Tuesday. These tempoquakes sent seismic intensity levels racing up the charts to 4 on Japan's seven-point scale. That's roughly equivalent to John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John's morning dance montage in "Grease," a strong enough shake to startle most of us, sending plates crashing to the floor and boiling pots bouncing off the stove.
Fast forward in time to last autumn's leafless, bare-branched September, and the area around the Tokara islands saw a seismic storm of its own, with a whopping 346 earthquakes recorded within a slim fifteen-day timespan. Nearly half of the dozen inhabited islands, which number roughly 700 souls in total, can be found within the chain. The far-flung isles include some live volcanoes and can only be reached by a twice-weekly ferry voyage under fair weather conditions.
With the chance of a magnitude-6-powered tremor still lingering, the people down there are keeping their eyes peeled. Hisayoshi Yokose, a marine volcanology associate prof at Kumamoto University, forewarned the inhabitants to brace themselves, stating it wouldn't be a huge surprise if a similar bag of nerves were about to unfurl.

The archipelago, populated by a shade over 125 million people, suffers about 1,500 seismic jolts annually, accounting for no less than 18% of the world's wobbles. The large majority of these shivers are mild as a lamb's purr, although their impact on the populace can vary.
In the opening verses of 2024, more than 400 folks swung by the pearly gates, with the cause being a devastating quake that struck the Noto Peninsula in central Japan. The occasion also witnessed countless "quake-linked" fatalities and ensuing collateral damage in the form of shattered buildings, torched infernos, and wrecked infrastructure. This unfortunate circumstance occurred at a time when families were basking in the magic of New Year's Day celebrations.
