Cycle Safety Woes in Saxony-Anhalt: Cyclists' Safety Perceptions Falter

Hey there! Here's a lowdown on the current state of cycling safety in Saxony-Anhalt, based on the ADFC's latest Bicycle Climate Test.

Things aren't looking peachy in Saxony-Anhalt, as our results show. The state's bicycle-friendliness hovered around the average mark—not great, not terrible—but still lagging behind many other regions in Germany. Stephan Marahrens, the Chairman of the ADFC in Saxony-Anhalt, wasn't mincing words when he said, "More needs to happen in traffic safety work."

The survey gathered responses from over 213,000 cyclists nationwide, with around 3,600 from Saxony-Anhalt. Halle (Saale) and the state capital, Magdeburg, ranked near the bottom among cities with 200,000 to 500,000 inhabitants. Halle came in 18th with a score of 4.2, and Magdeburg (4.34) trailed close behind in 23rd place.

According to Marahrens, safety is key to encouraging more people to hop on their bikes. "The perceived safety — that's the issue — has stagnated in Saxony-Anhalt." In 2022, three out of four people reported feeling unsafe on a bike—a statistic that sadly hasn't budged.

One significant concern? Drivers often whiz by cyclists with little regard for their space. This close call scenario might be enough to make even the bravest cyclist think twice about hitting the streets.

However, Marahrens isn't all doom and gloom for the past year. "It's clear that the downward trend has now been stopped. That's a good sign for us." Yet, as the old saying goes, progress waits for no one. Now it's time to turn the tide and make real improvements.

Dessau-Roßlau took the top spot in the survey, followed closely by Bernburg, Merseburg, and Salzwedel. Zerbst brought up the rear with a score of 4.6.

So, what can be done to improve cycling safety in Saxony-Anhalt? Well, ensuring cyclists have adequate infrastructure, addressing traffic conflicts, investing in cycling safety measures, and increasing driver awareness and enforcement are all crucial steps.

The community of cyclists in Saxony-Anhalt might benefit from a stronger focus on community policy to improve cycling safety, as highlighted by the ADFC. Moreover, vocational training programs could be instituted for drivers to enhance their awareness and understanding of safe sharing of roads with cyclists, contributing to a Safer cycling environment.
