The climate for cycling in Saxony-Anhalt has hit a plateau, as per the latest ADFC bicycle climate test for 2024. While the decline has been arrested, the region lags behind most of Germany in terms of bike-friendliness. "We need more progress in traffic safety initiatives," Steven Marahrens, the ADFC Saxony-Anhalt chair, commented.

Analysis of 213,000 responses from cyclists nationwide, including 3,600 from Saxony-Anhalt, reveals that Halle (Saale) and the state capital of Magdeburg rank in the lower third among cities with 200,000 to 500,000 inhabitants. Halle lands in 18th place, scoring 4.2, while Magdeburg (4.34) comes in 23rd.

A key aspect for bolstering cycling participation is the sense of safety cyclists feel while on the road. "The main issue is the perceived safety – it's stagnating in Saxony-Anhalt," Marahrens explains. Since 2022, he points out that three out of four cyclists have shared their feelings of insecurity in biking, a statistic that hasn't improved. A recurring issue is drivers overtaking cyclists with inadequate space.

While Marahrens acknowledges a positive trend in the data – that the downward trend is no longer present – he emphasizes the need for progress. "This is a positive sign for us," he says, adding, "now we need to move in the direction of improvement."

Dessau-Roßlau once again tops the Saxony-Anhalt rankings with a grade of 3.6, followed by Bernburg (3.7), Merseburg, and Salzwedel (each 3.8). Despite this, Zerbst remains at the bottom with a grade of 4.6.

Central problems in unsafe biking conditions often stem from inadequate infrastructure and support from policy makers. Areas with poor cycling infrastructure tend to lack suitable bike lanes, bike paths, or other cyclist-friendly features. Advocacy groups, such as the ADFC, play a vital role in promoting cycling and pushing for improvements in infrastructure and safety.

To improve, it's essential to invest in dedicated bike lanes, launch awareness campaigns, prioritize community involvement, and advocate for comprehensive cycling infrastructure plans. Routine maintenance of existing bike paths and lanes is also crucial in addressing safety concerns. Local cycling advocacy groups or the ADFC's 2024 survey report would provide more insight into specific situations and potential solutions in Saxony-Anhalt.

The ADFC, a prominent cycling advocacy group in Germany, is urging policy makers in Saxony-Anhalt to prioritize community involvement and invest in comprehensive cycling infrastructure plans. This includes the creation of dedicated bike lanes, launching awareness campaigns, and maintaining existing paths and lanes to improve cycling safety.

Vocational training programs could play a crucial role in fostering a safer environment for cyclists in Saxony-Anhalt. Such programs could focus on educating drivers on safe navigation around cyclists, emphasizing the importance of adequate space when overtaking, and promoting awareness about cyclists' rights and responsibilities.
