Number of Russian soldiers killed since 2022 revealed.
In the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the toll on both sides has been substantial. A recent report by the independent Russian news portal Mediazona, in collaboration with the BBC Russian service, reveals a staggering number of Russian military personnel casualties.
As of July 31, 2025, Mediazona's research has identified 121,507 Russian military personnel killed in the war in Ukraine, spanning from February 24, 2022, to the same date. This figure does not include additional losses that might have occurred after that date. It is important to note that the actual number of casualties is likely significantly higher due to underreporting by official sources.
The figures are a stark contrast to the approximately 14,500 Soviet soldiers who died in the approximately nine-year-long war in Afghanistan. The number of killed Russian soldiers, even if calculated conservatively, is immense.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also provided figures, stating that Russia's average daily losses in the war are approximately 1,000, with 500 dead and 500 wounded. He estimates that around 600,000 to 700,000 Russian soldiers have been wounded.
Journalists at Mediazona note that among the dead, 5,432 officers of the army and other security organs fell by August 1. The majority of the killed were between 33 and 35 years old. Even those over 60 years old were not spared from military service and death on the battlefield.
On a grim note, the Ukrainian army reported a total of 1,066,110 Russian soldiers killed or wounded since the start of the large-scale invasion. For the opposing side, Zelenskyy estimates that around 350,000 Russian soldiers have been killed.
These numbers serve as a grim reminder of the human cost of the ongoing conflict. It is crucial to continue seeking the truth and striving for peace.
