Sexual Violence Counseling Sessions on the Rise at Themis Center

The number of counseling sessions at Themis, a Berlin-based organization providing support to victims of sexual violence in the media and cultural sector, has seen a significant leap this year. By September, Themis experts had engaged in a record-breaking 550 conversations, double the number from 2021, and nearly 40% more than the previous year, as reported to the German Press Agency.

The spokesperson attributing the increase to the center's growing popularity explained that more individuals are seeking their discreet counseling service, many of whom may have been previously unaware of it.

More than half of the 48% verbal, non-verbal, and digital harassment cases were handled by the center. The remaining 50% encompassed physical assaults, serious sexualized violence, and other related incidents.

Themis offers complimentary legal and psychological assistance to users in their field. Acting as a mediator between victims and employers, they provide guidance to empower those affected and, if needed, help them take further steps. Funded by the Commissioner for Culture and Media Claudia Roth (Greens), as well as broadcasters, associations, and private companies, Themis is committed to continuingly addressing the escalating health issues related to sexual violence.

According to crime statistics, both men and women are affected by sexual violence, as evidenced by Themis' data.

While specific statistics on Themis aren't directly available, the rising demand for counseling services might be linked to several factors: increased awareness and reporting of sexual violence, a trauma-informed approach, the importance of support groups, community and cultural factors, and technological support.

Enrichment Data:

  1. Growing Awareness and Reporting: Awareness and reporting of sexual violence have increased in various sectors, including the media and cultural fields. This may lead to more people seeking support, subsequently increasing counseling session rates.
  2. Trauma-Informed Approach: A trauma-informed approach, as employed in treating survivors of domestic violence, involves creating a safe and empowering environment. This might require more frequent or intensive sessions to address the complex trauma experienced.
  3. Support Groups: Support groups, such as those provided by Themis, offer a network of peers who share similar experiences. Encouraged by this camaraderie, survivors might seek more counseling sessions to maintain that support network.
  4. Community and Cultural Factors: Cultural and media industries have unique dynamics that could influence reporting and seeking of support for sexual violence. Bystander intervention programs, community awareness initiatives, and positive cultural shifts contribute to a more supportive atmosphere, fostering the demand for counseling services.
  5. Technological Support: Online support groups and hotlines, available via organizations like RAINN, can simplify access to support for survivors from their own homes, potentially driving a surge in the frequency of counseling sessions.
