Nuclear submarines dispatched by Trump to strategic locations following alleged provocative actions by Russia
In a move aimed at bolstering security, US President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines closer to Russia. This decision, made on August 1, 2025, follows a series of provocative statements from Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy chairman of Russia's security council, and references to Russia’s automatic or semi-automatic nuclear weapons control system known as the "Dead Hand" or "Perimeter."
Typically, 8 to 10 of these submarines are deployed at any given time, each armed with up to 24 Trident II D5 missiles, capable of a range of 4,600 miles. One of the submarines deployed in response to Medvedev's comments is the Ohio-class ballistic-missile submarine USS Alaska.
The US President defended the deployment, stating it was a protective measure, not an act of aggression. Trump emphasized that the responsibility for the Russia-Ukraine conflict lies with former US President Joe Biden, not himself.
This deployment comes amid heightened tensions over Ukraine and the potential for escalating conflict. Trump has threatened severe economic sanctions on Russia if it does not cease its offensive in Ukraine by August 8, 2025. Medvedev responded to Trump’s tariff threats and nuclear posturing by accusing Trump of "playing the ultimatum game" and warned of the serious danger of escalating into war.
Russia, in response, announced the planned deployment of intermediate-range nuclear-capable missiles (Oreshnik) to Belarus and formally exited the INF Treaty, emphasizing a "new nuclear reality" in retaliation to US and NATO deployments in Europe. Medvedev suggested more steps in this nuclear escalation might follow.
In light of these developments, the US nuclear submarine deployment appears to be a direct military response to Russia's latest nuclear threats and escalating strategic posturing amid ongoing conflict and diplomatic breakdowns between the two powers. Trump's post on Truth Social suggested that the submarines were positioned "just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that."
