Nuclear submarines dispatched by Trump: Russia accused of inappropriate provocation

Yesterday saw a significant escalation in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, with reports of drone attacks and strategic military actions from both sides.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, 18 Ukrainian drones were shot down over Russian regions and the Sea of Azov. The attack resulted in the injury of ten people, including three children aged 9 and 10 and a 5-month-old infant. The exact nature of the drones was not specified, but the incident involved 18 drones.

The attack was reported by the head of the military administration of Kharkiv, Oleh Syniehubov, and the mayor of the city, Ihor Terekhov. Russian forces attacked the Kharkiv district of Kiev with a drone, according to the reports.

In response to these hostilities, Trump announced the deployment of two nuclear submarines. The deployment of the submarines is in "appropriate zones" but not specified. This move comes after harsh words spoken against him by Dmitry Medvedev, who is currently vice secretary of the Russian Security Council. Medvedev had written on X that "every ultimatum" issued by the occupant of the White House "is a step towards war". Trump previously called Medvedev a "failure" in response to his statements.

The Russian Defense Ministry also reported the incident, stating that the drones were Ukrainian. The location of the drone shootdowns was not specified beyond being over Russian regions and the Sea of Azov. The attack was also reported by the Russian news agency 'Tass' and cited by Ukrainska Pravda.

The ongoing conflict in 2025 remains marked by severe humanitarian consequences, including tens of thousands of civilian deaths, millions displaced, and Russia controlling about 18% of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea. The conflict dynamic is heavily influenced by Putin’s refusal to compromise on Ukraine's sovereignty and Russia’s strategic military adaptations in response to evolving battlefield conditions.

These developments indicate a conflict that is far from resolved, with both sides showing no signs of backing down. International pressure for de-escalation continues, but it remains to be seen whether it will have any impact on the ongoing hostilities.
