In a surprising turn of events, U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the tactical relocation of two nuclear submarines in response to statements made by former Russian leader Dmitri Medvedev. This move comes amidst an ongoing public spat between the two leaders, which has been escalating for several days.

The dispute began when Trump shortened his ultimatum to Russian President Vladimir Putin from 50 to 10 days, demanding a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine within that time. Medvedev responded by threatening direct military confrontation between Russia and the U.S. on the X platform, a response that Trump deemed as an inappropriate threat.

Trump described the tactical relocation of the nuclear submarines as a necessary measure for the safety of the U.S. population. He stated that the submarines will be moved to "suitable regions," but the exact locations or regions have not been specified publicly. Trump did not specify which submarines were involved in the relocation.

Medvedev has gained notoriety since the start of the war for his anti-Western outbursts, often garnished with nuclear threats. Trump's statement that Medvedev mentioned "atom," underscores the seriousness of the situation. If no agreement is reached by the end of next week, Trump has threatened to impose sanctions on Russia's trading partners.

The relocation was announced by Trump on his Truth Social platform on Friday. U.S. President Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, will travel to Russia after his visit to Israel, but details of the trip were not provided. As of Friday, Witkoff was still in the Middle East, assessing the situation in the Gaza Strip.

According to a previous report by the U.S. Congress Research Service, the Navy operates both nuclear-powered submarines with and without nuclear weapons on board. The use of these submarines in this context is not clear, but their presence in strategic locations could serve as a deterrent to any potential military action.

Meanwhile, the conflict in Ukraine continues to take a heavy toll on civilians. At least eleven people, including a five-month-old infant and two children aged nine and ten, were injured in a heavy Russian drone strike on the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. Two men were reportedly killed in a drone strike in the Russian region of Belgorod, near the border with Ukraine.

These developments highlight the escalating tensions between the U.S. and Russia, and the potential for further conflict in the region. As the situation continues to unfold, the world watches with bated breath, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
