In a concerning development, Ukrainian shelling near the Russian-held Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant on August 2, 2025, resulted in a tragic incident. A civilian was killed when their vehicle was hit, and a fire truck was targeted by a Ukrainian drone while extinguishing the resulting fire.

The incident, reported through the official Telegram channel of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, occurred approximately 1.2 kilometers from the plant's perimeter. The plant's management confirmed that no employees or emergency personnel were injured, and radiation levels remained normal.

The shelling damaged auxiliary buildings associated with the plant but did not affect the main nuclear reactors. The Zaporizhzhia plant, Europe's largest nuclear power facility, has been under Russian control since March 2022 and is not currently operating its reactors but requires power to keep nuclear fuel cooled.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors at the site heard explosions and observed smoke from the strike zone. In response, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi called for "maximum military restraint near nuclear facilities" to avoid the risk of a nuclear accident.

The director of ZNPP, Yuri Chernichuk, suggested that the strikes were aimed at achieving a media effect to strengthen Kyiv's negotiating position. However, the exact cause of the death and the identity of the deceased remain undisclosed.
