Nuclear bunker in The Hague repurposed as new music production facility

Nestled beneath the city streets of The Hague lies a unique and vibrant hub for Dutch pop culture – Subterra. This music studio complex, located in a former Cold War-era nuclear bunker, is the brainchild of Dutch musician and producer Jochem van der Saag and the result of a collective effort from makers and entrepreneurs from The Hague.

Subterra, managed by the Noodzetel Foundation, comprises 17 recording studios and rehearsal rooms, ranging in size from 11 square meters to 37 square meters. The complex offers more than just a space to create music. It provides access to a shared kitchen and community area, fostering a sense of camaraderie among its diverse group of residents, which includes highly ambitious and talented music professionals like Dutch pop trio Goldband.

The Hague's local government is determined to keep the city as the centre of Dutch pop culture. Saskia Bruines, The Hague's councillor for Finance, Culture, and Economic Development, considers Subterra a unique and important place in The Hague and the Netherlands. The renovation process of Subterra took fourteen months, transforming the once cold and sterile bunker into a warm and welcoming creative space.

Although the studios in Subterra have only basic soundproofing and no acoustic treatment, three of the larger studios boast a highly soundproofed room-within-a-room design. For those interested in renting a studio in Subterra next year, a waiting list has been opened.

Subterra's creation is a testament to The Hague's commitment to preserving and nurturing its music scene. The local government, in collaboration with the Noodzetel Foundation, aims to provide good rehearsal rooms and a safe place for equipment, deemed vital by the local government.

The Noodzetel Foundation, dedicated to supporting The Hague's musicians and encouraging cultural entrepreneurship, plays a crucial role in Subterra's management. The foundation's mission aligns with the city's vision of fostering a thriving and diverse music scene in The Hague.
