The National Rifle Association (NRA) has emerged victorious in a prolonged legal battle against New York Attorney General Letitia James. The court's final judgment on Dec. 11, 2024, marked a significant victory for the NRA, which was founded in 1871 under New York not-for-profit law and is the oldest civil-rights organization in the country.

James had sued the NRA in 2020, aiming to dissolve the organization and seize its assets. The lawsuit was part of her campaign promises to target the NRA and its constituents. However, the court rejected her demands to revoke the NRA's charter and appoint a monitor to oversee the association. Instead, the judge adopted the NRA's strengthened internal audit processes.

The NRA's victory sets a precedent for other organizations targeted by government actors for their political advocacy. It sends a clear message that such attempts will not go unchallenged. The NRA's work has been instrumental in ensuring Americans' right to keep and bear arms, as enumerated in the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Despite the costly battle, the NRA remains strong, safe, and independent. The organization can now fully concentrate on its core missions of membership, competition, and protecting the Second Amendment. However, the NRA must remain vigilant, as there will always be more anti-freedom activists like Letitia James looking for opportunities to challenge the organization.
