Omid Nouripour, Green Party chair, shares personal struggles

In an emotional address at the party's national convention in Karlsruhe, Omid Nouripour, co-chair of the German Greens, revealed the impact of his political work on his relatives back in Iran. Speaking passionately, he confessed receiving calls from family members urging him to tone down his criticisms of the Iranian regime due to the threats they faced as a result of his outspoken stance. Tragically, not all who faced such threats survived.

Nouripour, a dedicated critic of the Iranian leadership, encountered significant challenges in finding his footing once again following these harrowing experiences. Born and raised in Tehran, he and his family settled in Hesse at the age of 13.

Last year, amidst critical public protests in Iran, physicians, lawyers, artists, students, and others joined the battle against the government and the Islamic system of rule. The demonstrations, which gained momentum amid violence and suppression, were sparked by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody. She had been detained for allegedly failing to adhere to the Islamic dress code.

Nouripour's advocacy for human rights in Iran, with particular focus on empowering courageous women, has resulted in severe repercussions for his family members. This sobering reminder drove home the consequences of his unwavering commitment to promoting justice and equality.

In an interview with Tagesspiegel, Nouripour elaborated on his feelings of responsibility and guilt, reflecting on the fact that his criticism of the Iranian regime had placed his loved ones in harm's way. He expressed an intensified sense of empathy towards the Iranian people, recognizing that the struggles they have faced for decades have mirrored his own experiences. In addition, he highlighted the divisive nature of the Iranian regime, which incentivizes individuals to inform on one another and helps perpetuate a climate of fear and repression.
