Holy Cough: A Long-Standing Tradition at Holy Cross

The College of the Holy Cross, a prestigious liberal arts institution located in Worcester, Massachusetts, is home to a unique and humorous tradition known as the Holy Cough, or Consecrated Eutussia.

According to anecdotal accounts, the Holy Cough originated in 1843 when a student or faculty member coughed during a sacred ceremony, and the act was thereafter consecrated in jest as a college ritual. The tradition has since evolved, and it is now expected to be "tough out" by students.

One of the notable figures associated with the Holy Cough is Dr. Anthony Fauci, a physician-scientist and immunologist who served as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) from 1984 to 2022 and the chief medical advisor to the president from 2021 to 2022. Dr. Fauci, who attended Holy Cross, is a survivor of the Holy Cough, although the specifics of his experience remain unknown.

In recent times, the Holy Cough has been circulating on the Holy Cross campus. Students are advised to drink as much alcohol as possible, avoid sleeping, and keep one eye open while sleeping if they are infected. It is also suggested that clubs can help students sweat out the toxins associated with the Holy Cough.

Despite the light-hearted nature of the Holy Cough, the College of the Holy Cross remains a serious institution with a strong affiliation with the Roman Catholic Church. Every year, students look forward to the upcoming spring concert, and this year, there are rumors about the Barden Bellas being on the shortlist for the event.

The spring concert at Holy Cross is always remembered as a perfect event by students. Last year's concert was no exception, with students dancing the night away and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

As for the Catalina Wine Mixer, a notorious darty (dapper party) at Holy Cross, it is a popular event among students, with Piper Guiney '28 discussing it recently.

While the exact origin of the Holy Cough remains a mystery, it is a tradition that has become an integral part of the Holy Cross experience. For more authoritative information about this tradition, one might find it in the College of the Holy Cross archives or publications dedicated to the school's history and folklore.
