Noted Kashmiri independence advocate, Prof Abdul Ghani Butt, has passed away at the age of 90.
Professor Abdul Ghani Butt, a prominent figure in the Kashmiri freedom movement and former chairman of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, passed away on Wednesday evening in Botingo, Sopore, Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
The news of his death was reported by the Kashmir Media Service.
Both President Asif Ali Zardari and Acting President Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani hailed Professor Butt's lifelong struggle for the Kashmiri cause. In their separate statements, they praised the services of Professor Abdul Ghani Butt.
President Asif Ali Zardari expressed deep grief over the demise of Professor Abdul Ghani Butt, while Acting President Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani also expressed similar sentiments. They prayed for eternal peace for the departed soul of Professor Abdul Ghani Butt and expressed sympathy for the bereaved family.
Professor Butt was an accomplished academic who taught Persian and held graduate degrees in Persian, Economics, and Political Science. He completed a master's in Persian and earned a law degree from Aligarh Muslim University.
During his political career, Professor Butt headed the Muslim Conference in IIOJK and was known as a member of a political party in the region after his academic career. He was dismissed by the Indian occupation authorities for his pro-freedom stance in the held territory.
Professor Butt was 90 years old at the time of his death and passed away following a brief illness.
