High School Education Isn't for Everyone According to Star-Podcast 'The Boss' - Not every individual is suited for high school experience.

This article is a throwback from stern's archives, first published in May 2024.

Professor Elsbeth Stern, and authority on teaching and learning research at ETH Zurich, shares her insights on the elusive nature of intelligence in the stern podcast series, "Die Boss." Hosted by multi-board member Simone Menne, this dynamic podcast delves into the world of female leadership.

A Closer Look at Intelligence

In the latest episode, Menne and Stern discuss various definitions of intelligence, and why social or emotional competence does not factor into Stern's research. Stern explains, "Social and emotional intelligence may seem appealing, but the measuring instruments used lack the quality and precision of intelligence tests."

The Distribution of Intelligence

A startling 70% of the population tends to have a similar intelligence level, making up what is called the mean. The remaining 30% can be divided equally into those who are above and below the mean. Stern's research, however, reveals intriguing findings when it comes to gender differences. The mean shows no significant differences between males and females. Yet, research shows that extremes populate the upper and lower percentiles differently, with more men statistically represented at the extreme ends.

The Pressure on Parents and Education Systems

When asked about the fervor among parents to label their child as more intelligent in order to attend a grammar school, Stern addresses the issue from a statistical standpoint. "Given that intelligence is evenly distributed," explains Stern, "the desire for half of the students to attend grammar school becomes problematic since it is essentially cutting at the peak of the curve."

Exploring the Role of Universities, Teachers, Parents, and Bosses in the Intellectual Hierarchy

In the insightful episode, Stern unpacks what implications her findings have for higher education institutions, educators, parents, and workplace dynamics, where an employee's intelligence may not always match up with their superiors.
