Norwegian Royal Family Member Charged with Rape, Faces Decade in Prison: Key Facts
Marius Borg Høiby, the son of Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit, is currently facing a series of criminal charges. The 28-year-old has been accused of 32 offenses, including four counts of rape, domestic abuse, several acts of violence, vandalism, violations of restraining orders, and secretly filming women’s genitals without their consent.
The alleged incidents occurred between 2018 and 2024, with one rape charge reported after the investigation had started. Høiby has denied the most serious charges but plans to plead guilty to some lesser offenses. If found guilty, he faces up to 10 years in prison.
The domestic violence charge against Høiby involved allegations of repeated hitting, choking, kicking, and grabbing. Following this incident, Høiby admitted to causing bodily harm under the influence of cocaine and alcohol. He was also charged with physical assault against a woman, bringing the domestic violence charge against him.
In 2023, Høiby was contacted by the police to discuss his associations with gang members, specifically from Hells Angels bikers and Oslo's Albanian mafia. This was not his first brush with the law, as he was arrested in 2017 for using cocaine at a music festival.
The royal family, from which Høiby has been distanced due to the ongoing legal proceedings, has stated they will continue their duties while the case is being decided by the courts. Høiby is not a part of the Norwegian royal family in an official capacity and does not hold a royal title.
As of the latest information, the trial date has not been specified. The investigation and indictment occurred in 2024–2025, but no trial schedule has been publicly disclosed. The trial is scheduled for early 2026.
Høiby is the son of Mette-Marit from a previous relationship, prior to her marriage to Crown Prince Haakon in 2001. It is important to note that the charges against Høiby do not reflect on the royal family or the Crown Princess's current role.
