Norway Grants Honorary Ranks to Remarkable King Penguin, Adopts as Military Emblem
Who would've imagined that a penguin, of all creatures, would receive honorary titles and earn a rank as Major General within the Norwegian armed forces? Yet, here we are, discussing the incredible tale of Sir Nils Olav III. This peculiar story takes us back to 1961, during a military exercise event hosted by the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, where the Norwegian Royal Guard was in attendance.
One of their number, Major Nils Egelien, caught the eye of the area's zoo residents, particularly the penguins. He found himself captivated by their unique walk, which bore a striking resemblance to the movements of the Royal Guard. And so, he selected one special penguin to represent the official military mascot when he returned to Edinburgh in 1972.
The Edinburgh Zoo embraced the new mascot, christening him Nils Olav in honor of Major Nils Egelien and the then King of Norway, Olav V. The bird quickly rose through the ranks of the Scandinavian force, and over the years, three different penguins have carried the name Sir Nils Olav, with the current bearer being Sir Nils Olav III.

An intriguing moment in Sir Nils Olav's story came when, as a knight, he required the approval of King Harald V of Norway for his honorary mention. He even holds a unique place in the Guinness Book of Records as the penguin with the highest rank.
During his annual appearances at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, Sir Nils Olav often supervises the formation of the Norwegian Royal Guard soldiers. In 2023, his latest promotion to Major General marked a significant milestone in his career as the beloved mascot of the guard.
Sergeant Fredrik Gresseth of the Norwegian Royal Guard's Band and Training Team shared the sentiment, stating, "The tradition of sending fish to Nils Olav III and his family, Christmas cards, and visiting him during the unit's participation in the Tattoo was an important part of the Battalion's history. His promotion this August, for good conduct and being an excellent example to the rest of the Edinburgh Zoo penguins, marks a milestone in his career as the guard's mascot."
