Norwalk High Girls Volleyball Shines in Suburban Valley Conference Matches

Norwalk High has started the 2022/2023 season with a strong showing in the Suburban Valley Conference, recently hosting Downey High on September 13 and welcoming Warren High on September 18. In a standout performance, the team secured a victory against La Mirada High in their league opener on September 13.

The match against La Mirada High was a closely contested affair, with both teams displaying impressive volleyball skills. Norwalk High's head coach, Paola Nava, called a rare timeout early in the match due to some errors, but the team responded admirably, with junior middle blocker Addison Tufaga serving eight straight points, five of which were aces, in the first set. This impressive run gave Norwalk High a significant advantage, and they went on to win the set.

La Mirada High's coach acknowledges that the season has been tough, but sees signs of growth and improvement in the team. Junior outside hitter Keliana Gonzalez served well in the first set against Norwalk High, but the team lost the set. However, La Mirada High fought back, with Gonzalez reeling off seven straight points in the first set, taking a one-point lead at 11-10. Norwalk responded with seven straight points, setting the tone for the rest of the match.

Junior outside hitter/middle blocker Mirei Sanchez dominated the next two sets, leading all players with 21 kills, four aces, and a pair of blocks in the match. Sanchez, described as Norwalk's 6'1" veteran offensive leader, was instrumental in Norwalk's victory. Sophomore defensive specialist Antoinette Espina also contributed significantly, reeling off nine consecutive points in the second set.

La Mirada High is struggling with a new head coach and four returning players from last season's team that graduated nine members. The team is missing several players from last season's squad, which is evident in their performance so far this season.

Norwalk High's head coach, Paola Nava, emphasized the importance of focusing on the present and not worrying about future games. She encourages her team to maintain this approach as they continue their journey in the Suburban Valley Conference.

Looking ahead, La Mirada High visited Mayfair High on September 13 and will travel to Downey High on September 20. Norwalk High will host Bellflower High on September 20, looking to continue their winning streak in the conference.
