Norwalk regains composure after a slow initial set, clinching the next three against La Mirada in the Girls Volleyball match of the Gateway League.
Norwalk High's girls volleyball team secured a thrilling victory against La Mirada High in a recent match, ending the first round of league play on a high note. The team is now preparing for their next challenge, a visit to Mayfair High on Thursday.
The match started promisingly for Norwalk High, with junior middle blocker Addison Tufaga serving eight straight points, five of which were aces, to establish an 8-0 lead. Senior opposite hitter Giselle Salazar added to the team's momentum with an ace, contributing to a one-point lead at 11-10 in one set.
Junior outside hitter Keliana Gonzalez, one of the four returning players for Norwalk High and a key player and captain, played a crucial role in the match. Gonzalez served seven straight points for La Mirada High, helping them turn a one-point deficit into a seven-point lead in one set. However, Norwalk High managed to rally back, thanks in part to freshman middle blocker Lailanee Cano who had three straight aces.
In the following sets, junior outside hitter/middle blocker Mirei Sanchez dominated for Norwalk High, leading the team in kills (21) and aces (4). Senior libero Nayeli Sanchez led the team with eight aces in the match.
La Mirada High was led by Gonzalez, who had 10 kills and nine aces in the match. Despite the loss, the La Mirada High team is focusing on growth and improvement in each game, starting with Downey on Tuesday.
Norwalk High, on the other hand, is hosting Downey High this past Tuesday and welcomes Warren High on Sept. 18. The team is relying heavily on Gonzalez, not just for her athletic prowess, but also for her mental and physical support of her teammates.
Kayla Long, the new head coach of the La Mirada High School girls' volleyball team, was previously from Price High School. La Mirada High went to Mayfair this past Tuesday and will travel to Downey on Tuesday.
In the final set, Norwalk High managed to turn the tables, winning 25-20, after losing the first set (22-25). The team went on to win the next three sets (25-12, 25-15, 25-20).
Gonzalez, who is considered an overall great athlete and teammate, played a pivotal role in the team's comeback. Sophomore defensive specialist Antoinette Espina also contributed significantly, reeling off nine consecutive points for Norwalk High in the second set.
The victory against La Mirada High marks a strong start for Norwalk High in the league, and they will look to continue their momentum in the upcoming matches against Mayfair High and Warren High.
