Northwest Media Group is now under the control of Madsack.
Madsack Media Group to Acquire NWZ Group, Accelerating Digitalization and Growth
In a significant move, Madsack Media Group has announced its intention to acquire the NWZ Group, a move that is expected to boost digitalization and growth for both parties. The deal, scheduled to take place in early 2026, will see Madsack Media Group incorporating the Nordwest Mediengruppe from Oldenburg, comprising regional newspapers such as the Nordwest-Zeitung, Emder Zeitung, and Anzeiger für Harlingerland, as well as the weekly paper business, digital platforms like nwzonline.de, and printing and logistics operations with affiliated service companies.
The sale involves the publishing, printing, and logistics businesses of the NWZ Group, a move that ensures the long-term strength of these businesses. Stephan von Bothmer, on behalf of NWZ Group shareholders, expressed positivity about the sale, implying that it will have a positive impact on the long-term viability of the businesses.
The acquisition comes at a time when the NWZ Group has seen a decline in subscription numbers and circulation. In Q2, Nordwest Zeitung sold around 70,000 printed and e-paper copies, a decrease from over 80,500 last year. However, digital platforms like nwzonline.de have shown promising growth, with August seeing 5.95 million visits and 1.65 million qualified clients, according to IVW. The paid-content offering "NWZ online Plus" currently has over 26,100 daily usage rights, also according to IVW.
Thomas Düffert, CEO of Madsack Media Group, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating it accelerates the digitalization and growth trajectory of his company. Each business area is expected to benefit from Madsack Media Group's extensive experience.
Madsack Media Group, one of Germany's largest newspaper associations, has established titles, including in Lower Saxony. The acquisition of businesses with a presence in Lower Saxony is seen as a means to accelerate digitalization and growth for Madsack Media Group.
The entire weekly newspaper business is also part of the transaction. The deal is expected to bring synergies to the NWZ Group businesses, leveraging Madsack Media Group's resources and expertise.
Stephan von Bothmer is optimistic about the future, believing the sale will have a positive impact on the long-term viability of the businesses. The acquisition is a significant step for both Madsack Media Group and the NWZ Group, marking a new chapter in the evolution of the media landscape in Germany.
