Northrop Grumman Hits 1,000th F-35 Fuselage Milestone in Record Time

Northrop Grumman has reached a major production milestone for the F-35 stealth fighter. On 12 January 2023, the company completed its 1,000th centre fuselage for the advanced auto aircraft. This achievement highlights the firm’s key role in manufacturing critical components for all three F-35 variants.

The company produces a centre fuselage roughly every 30 hours on a single assembly line. These structures form the core of each F-35, supporting the aircraft’s stealth and structural integrity. Beyond fuselages, Northrop Grumman also manufactures wing skins and elements of the jet’s low observable technologies.

Advanced tools have helped streamline production. Augmented and virtual reality systems cut assembly time and reduced training needs for technicians. The firm also provides ongoing sustainment support for F-35 operators worldwide, ensuring the fleet remains operational. Northrop Grumman’s contributions extend to major onboard systems. These include the AN/APG-81 radar and integrated communications, navigation, and identification systems. Such technology is vital for the F-35’s combat capabilities and global deployment.

The 1,000th fuselage marks a significant step in F-35 production. With a new unit completed every 30 hours, the programme continues to expand its output. Northrop Grumman’s work remains essential to the aircraft’s development, maintenance, and operational success.
