Smokers no longer tolerated at some beaches in the north - Northern Germany's beaches are turning smoke-free to fight litter and pollution
Beaches in northern Germany are increasingly going smoke-free. More coastal towns in Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have set up non-smoking zones in recent years. The move follows growing frustration over discarded cigarette butts littering the sand.
The island of Sylt has taken a different approach. Instead of outright bans, it provides portable beach ashtrays and focuses on regular cleaning. Many other towns have now adopted this idea to keep their shores tidy.
Göhren on Rügen introduced smoke-free beach sections years ago. Since 2022, at least 15 more coastal spots have followed suit. These include Grömitz, Timmendorfer Strand, and Scharbeutz in Schleswig-Holstein, as well as Boltenhagen, Kühlungsborn, and Heringsdorf in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Some areas have gone further. On Föhr, smoking is banned across most of Wyk's beaches, with only five small designated smoking areas. Eckernförde made its entire main beach smoke-free in 2022. This trend isn't limited to Germany. Coastal regions in Spain, France, and Italy have also introduced similar restrictions in recent years.
The push for smoke-free beaches continues to spread across northern Germany. Towns are either banning smoking entirely or offering ashtrays to reduce litter. The changes aim to keep the coastline cleaner for visitors and wildlife alike.
