Upcoming Changes to Train Services in Northern Germany 🚂
Get ready for some major improvements to train services in the northern part of Germany! Deutsche Bahn (DB), the country's national railway company, has announced some exciting changes, including faster connections, more frequent trains, and enhanced access to coastal destinations.
Here's what passengers can expect after the timetable update coming this weekend:
Improved Connections to the Coast
Travelers from Hamburg to Copenhagen will be thrilled to learn about the increased frequency of trains, saving them from needing to change in Schleswig. Additionally, Deutsche Bahn has announced that trains between Berlin and Amsterdam will run faster via Hanover, and more frequently towards the coast, including trips to popular destinations like Sylt.
Faster Trains between Berlin and Amsterdam
The journey time on the section between Hanover and Amsterdam will get even quicker thanks to the use of multi-system locomotives, which will eliminate the need to change engines at Bad Bentheim. This change will shave 15 minutes off the trip for passengers heading to Amsterdam.
Enhanced Access to North Friesland and Westerland/Sylt
Beginning in March 2024, residents of Stuttgart and Frankfurt/Main will benefit from a daily intercity train running year-round to North Friesland, with a stop at Westerland/Sylt. In the opposite direction, the train will also be a daily option.
Faster Trains on the ICE Route Cologne-Emden-Norddeich/Mole
During the peak season, passengers will enjoy the comfort of high-speed ICE trains on the ICE route connecting Cologne, Emden, and Norddeich/Mole. What's more, the Saturday connection between Stuttgart and Norddeich-Mole will become significantly faster.
Upgrades to the Berlin-Hanover-Rhine/Ruhr Axis
On the Berlin-Hanover-Rhine/Ruhr axis, a new ICE line operating at two-hour intervals will be introduced, potentially reducing travel times by up to ten minutes. Passengers on the Berlin-Hannover-Düsseldorf and Berlin-Stendal-Göttingen-Frankfurt Airport connections can also look forward to more frequent train services to Wolfsburg's main station.
However, with these improvements come higher prices for the popular Flextickets, which offer passengers a certain degree of flexibility when choosing trains.
