Greenland Faces a Friendly Challenge Against TSV Kropp
Prior to making a decision, the Greenland team, coached by Morten Rutkjær, must find alternative ways to gain match practice. A week-long training stint in Skærbæk, located in the German-Danish border region, has already yielded a 1:1 draw against the reserves of Silkeborg IF cup finalists. A match against German Landesligist TSV Kropp is still planned, according to association statements.
This unique match, made possible by a mutual connection within Silkeborg, boasts an international character, despite not being an official contest, declares Kaj Andersen, the team manager of the Sydslesvig selection. His team, composed of players from Flensburg, Schleswig, and the surrounding areas, predominantly compete in the Landesliga or Verbandsliga. (dpa/vb)
Football Ambitions Facing RoadblocksGreenland's bid to join CONCACAF has met with rejection at an extraordinary congress before the 2023 Gold Cup, marking the second time the bid has been turned down. The Greenland Football Association (KAK) initially submitted its application in May 2024, but the decision was driven by the organization's statutes and procedures. Despite this setback, the KAK remains optimistic about Greenland's future in international football, drawing inspiration from the Faroe Islands' membership in UEFA.
In the ongoing quest for international recognition, Greenland's football team is seeking alternative methods to gain match practice, such as the upcoming friendly match against TSV Kropp, a German Landesligist team. Meanwhile, the country's application to join the North, Central American, and Caribbean Football Confederation (Concacaf) faces hurdles, with a recent rejection at the 2023 Gold Cup congress. Despite these setbacks, the Greenland Football Association (KAK) continues to look towards the success of the Faroe Islands in UEFA as a source of inspiration. Weekly MOPO provides sports analysis and coverage of such ongoing efforts, offering insights into the world of international football.
