The Clamor for an Unfettered Truce in Ukraine: UK, Nordics, and More Push for Peace As Tensions Mount

Northern European nations, including Britain, urge for an immediate and unconditional halt to hostilities in Ukraine.

In a recent summit held in Oslo, Norway, leaders from Great Britain and several Nordic countries have demanded an unconditional cessation of hostilities in Ukraine. Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Støre, stated on a Friday press briefing, "We urge for an unconditional truce, to foster lasting tranquility." A failure to enforce such a ceasefire, he added, should be met with punitive measures.

In an evening conference with US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the heads of state from the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) have expressed their concern. Comprised of ten countries - Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Sweden - JEF was set up in 2014.

During a joint news conference with Støre, Finnish President Alexander Stubb explained that the JEF is striving to coordinate potential sanctions with the US. Currently, there are discussions on implementing sanctions within the Russian banking and energy sectors, as suggested by Zelensky, Stubb conveyed. Russia, according to Stubb, is experiencing both military and economic turmoil, making it crucial to apply maximum pressure for a favorable resolution.

Since Trump advocated for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire on his digital platform Truth Social following a call with Zelensky, interest in achieving this goal has escalated. On Friday, French President Emmanuel Macron endorsed Trump's initiative. "We must rally together towards this pursuit with no delay, unjustified objections, or delaying tactics," Macron stated on his online platform X.
