Heeding the Call for Ceasefire in Ukraine

Northern European nations, including Britain, demand an immediate, unconditional halt to hostilities in Ukraine.

Last Friday, Norway's Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Støre, led demands for an immediate, unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine during a summit held in Oslo, Norway. Amid this international gathering, he declared, "We need an unconditional ceasefire... to secure a lasting peace."

Throughout the past week, leaders from the multinational rapid reaction force, Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), have held discussions with both US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This alliance, established in 2014, comprises the United Kingdom, along with ten Northern European countries: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, the Netherlands, Sweden, and more.

At a joint press conference with Støre, Finland's President Alexander Stubb revealed that the JEF is eager to work together with the United States to implement potential sanctions if the ceasefire isn't respected by either party. Currently, the possibility of increased sanctions on the Russian banking and energy sectors is under consideration, as proposed by Zelenskyy, Stubb explained.

In a move to promote dialogue, Donald Trump called for a month-long unconditional ceasefire via his online platform Truth Social following a telephone conversation with Zelenskyy. President Emmanuel Macron of France gave his support to Trump's initiative on Friday, stressing the importance of uniting efforts without delay, dubious excuses, or delaying tactics to reach the ceasefire objectives.
